Australia - Tea and Books on holiday! (Part One: Books)

Aloha!

A few weeks ago I had the misfortune to be returning from a lovely few festive weeks in Aus.
Whilst I didn't get through as many books as usual (only one and a bit!) I did have my fair share of teas, so figured I could cobble together a decent enough blog post about it all. I'll start with book musings.

Talon by Julie Kagawa

Snappy Summary: Dragons hunted almost to extinction- dragons go underground- dragons disguised as humans- teenage dragons learn to blend in with human society.....

I have had this book on my kindle for a very long time and thought it was about time I actually read it. What really drew me to this book was the original concept (although I have also read The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman which features a human-ish dragon). There were parts where the teenage aspect did become a little overwhelming but after a slowish start (both world and character building), I found that the story was compelling enough to negate this. There was chemistry between characters, moral conflicts and believable teenage-ness, but I would have preferred a lot more 'fantasy'. As this is the beginning of a 'Saga' I am hopeful that the amount of teen politics will reduce and the twists, turns and mythology of fantasy will take over.

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch

Snappy Summary: Junior policeman is at a murder scene- meets ghost- supernatural police department exists- learns magic- polices.

Again I went for this book as it was something a little bit different. At the time when it was in the bestseller charts I picked it up several times only to put it back again, but I saw it on Amazon when I was shopping for holiday reads and decided to finally take the plunge- at 70% through I can say that it was well worth it!

Come back soon for Aussie tea shop and cafe ramblings!
